Artist Statement
I am an amateur artist who grew up in an artistic household (Mom was a
professional in the Philadelphia area), and only recently rediscovered my love
for capturing the outdoors on canvas. I’ve taken several workshops in
the past few years with renowned professionals, lessons from a
Stowe professional watercolorist, and read heavily; I’m most influenced by
Gruppe, Movali, Hibbard, and Carlson (all impressionists from early
Cape Anne MA) and hope to achieve a small percentage of their skill.
Artist Biography
Having been retired for the past seven years, I now have the time and
inclination to create more serious artwork as an amateur. That said, I have
a long history of exposure to art and painting.
My Mom, E. Jane Given, was a professional watercolorist in the Philadelphia
area, and taught many adult classes, which I was obliged to attend starting
at the tender age of 10; it was a start! My Aunt Eleanor Sale was also an accomplished watercolorist.
Watercolor was my go-to medium for many years, but I rarely painted.
There was a long hiatus while my family and professional life as a food
chemist grew, and I didn’t paint at all.
In 2018 my interest in art returned. My wife Janie bought me a set of 3 lessons
from Lisa Beach, who provided expert guidance and honed my skills; I
continued group and private lessons with Lisa using both watercolor and
acrylics. Since then I’ve taken many lessons & workshops with Eric Tobin,
T.M. Nicholas, Emily Passman, Rosalie Sidoti, Don Demers, Ken Knowles …
Eric talked me into switching to oil paint,
especially if I wanted to do winter scenes – water freezes!
My first oil was of a covered bridge, “Over the river and through the woods”,
which was accepted for exhibit at Bryan Gallery in Jeffersonville, VT, and subsequently sold (sad). I’ve also exhibited at the North Shore Art Association
in Gloucester, MA, Rockport Art Association & Museum, Copley Hospital,
University of Vermont Medical Center, Conomo Point in Essex, MA, and
St. John’s Episcopal Church in Stowe, VT.
I really enjoy the challenge of rendering a painting that captures the moment, especially lights and shadows, and I get immense joy from capturing the
emotional feeling of a place and a time.

“Let Go”
by Artist Bethanne Knudsen
Exhibit: January 11- February 15, 2026
Opening Reception: 5-6:30 pm on Thursday, January 15th
Artist Statement
I explore materials and methods across a variety of media, experimenting with ideas of content and narrative.
My creative process is open-ended, driven by an interest in the inherent strengths and unique characteristics of different materials and techniques.
In this series, my original drawings and etchings are translated into Jacquard-woven fabric, creating a grayscale underpainting. This custom fabric becomes the canvas on which I paint, using a range of media to introduce color.
Each piece invites close attention to an object where weaving and painting converge.
Artist Biography
Bethanne earned a BFA in Fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA in Textiles from the University of Kansas. She initially taught art and design before becoming the director of Training and Technical Support for Jacquard Master software, where she trained designers in Jacquard weaving CAD technology.
Later, she founded The Jacquard Center, a training retreat that offered advanced classes on designing for Jacquard looms. The center attracted artists from across North America and Europe.
Bethanne also co-founded The Oriole Mill, a textile mill that produced original Jacquard-woven fabrics. As the creative director, she was responsible for creating fabric designs and overseeing product development until the mill closed due to the pandemic.
In 2024, Hurricane Helene forced Bethanne to leave North Carolina. She and her cat made their way to Vermont, where she had a close friend. More than a year later, Bethanne continues to build a new life in Vermont, which she now considers home.

Rhythms of the Garden: The Abstract Paintings of Julia Purinton
St. John’s in the Mountains is pleased to exhibit original abstract paintings by Julia Purinton.
Pieces - with names like “Happy Returns”, “Secret Garde” and “Sunny Road” - evoke the warmth and vividness of summertime.
Abstract art and jazz music move like echoes of freedom—colors swirling like saxophone solos,
rhythms painted in bold strokes. Each defies the expected, chasing truth through chaos and grace. Together,
they are the language of feeling, unspoken yet deeply known.
Julia Purinton spent her childhood in Virginia and Pennsylvania, graduated from Harvard College with a degree in Fine Arts, pursued a course of study at the School of Fine Arts in New York City, and now divides her time betwee
Baltimore, MD and Vermont’s Mad River Valley.
Rhythms of the Garden will be on display June 8- July 20, 2025, through the Stowe Jazz Fest, including 2 concerts at St. John’s.
Sundays, 12-2 pm
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 am- 2 pm
